Lets restore the Krupp Howitzer Cannon

posted 4 Feb 2015, 16:53 by Christel Mex

At the February Council meeting, I supported the motion to restore the Krupp Howitzer Cannon on Osmond Terrace.

The cannon was captured by Australian soldiers in the Battle of Beersheba in 1917, made famous by the 1987 film “The Light Horsemen”.

The cannon has special significance to our city. Shortly after the war, Senator William Story - a former Mayor of Kensington & Norwood - served on the Australian War Museum Committee and lobbied that a selection of these ‘trophies’ b...e divided amongst the states.

Subsequently, the Town of Kensington & Norwood then applied to be the custodian of this cannon. We have an obligation to our soldiers, veterans and community to remain true to our promise and preserve this rare piece of Australian history.
